History of Rumours/Building of the “Floating Prayer”
Marcia Schwalm founded Rumours Hair Design in 1983. For more than 30 years, she, along with her talented staff, catered to their clients’ needs from inside the Bradford building on Main Street in Fort Myers, Florida.
When the landlord was ready to renovate and make changes, Marcia started looking for a new place call home. Building after building. Space after space. Nothing felt right. One day, Marcia said a prayer: “God, where do I go now? Where do you want me to have the salon?” She heard an answer: put the salon on a boat.
Marcia started doing research.
First stop was the Fort Myers Yacht Basin. They loved the idea.
Next, the Florida State Board, the US Coast Guard and the EPA. They all gave a green light!
Next, she started searching for the perfect boat: internet, boat shows, boat owners. She shared her dream with anyone willing to listen. She just couldn’t figure out how to make this dream come true. She was started to feel frustrated and confused.
Then one day, she was at the library and saw a book on houseboats. She checked it out and headed home. Inside was the answer she was seeking.
In May 2004, the construction began to create a custom-designed houseboat. Over the years, Marcia experienced a variety of challenges but she never gave up on her dream (and her prayers) to see the houseboat completed.
The 2,000+ square-foot boat finally arrived in the Fort Myers Yacht Basin in August 2008. The Grand Opening was held November 14, 2008.
Since then, Rumours Hair Design has been a floating dream come true! It has also provided a constant reminder to Marcia, her family, friends, co-workers and clientele, that anything is possible when you work hard enough and trust in the Lord.
